The Known Unknowns EP There's enough here to surprise in the 10 minute debut EP from London quartet The Known Unknowns. A zesty mixture of heavy and light rock, it kind of sounds like the tunes have been done before. Maybe a more rockier version of peers Bloc Party with a hint of Metallica, the guys are led with style by singer Neil Walsh who has a voice that you can't escape from. Who Needs the Pouring Rain is a short and catchy ballad and Solidarity has a sleazy drum opening which easily challenges the London's Burning scene. Walsh reminds the listener of a Southern version of, say, Tom Smith(Editors) while the guitars have a shimmering edge on Solidarity before returning to low-fi tuning that complement each other. The opening song, deep breath, you lack the spiritual qualities necessary for this position, (phew) is a decent introduction. Their role in the future could be to fill the gap between heavy and indie, a surprisingly barren territory- even these tunes could satisfy the middle men…not bad at all. 3.5/5 Lunatic Fringe |
